How Expats Can Change the World with Impact Mindfulness…
I’ve written Expat Mindfulness – The Book as a companion to The Definitive Guide to Costa Rica Expat Living. Its purpose is to encourage what I call “expat mindfulness” and to provide ideas about how to put the concept into practice. It’s written with the Costa Rica expat in mind, but the principles are equally applicable wherever you might decide to plant yourself.
Expat Mindfulness – The Book is a new spin on a topic I’ve been writing about for years called Impact Mindfulness. In short, impact mindfulness is a mindset for living an impactful life that is based on the three foundational pillars: (1) prioritizing impact over self-interest; (2) embracing the concept of the Big US; and (3) seeking to remove all impact blinders. For those interested in delving deeper into the concept, I’ve written two other books on it, The Revolutionary Misfit Manifesto and The Impact Revolution.
I hope this book gets the point across that expat mindfulness is a process. It takes time and effort to apply and perfect…well, you’ll never really perfect it. What really counts is not some ephemeral end result, but the process itself.
I hope you enjoy reading my book, but more importantly I hope we all benefit from your reading of this little eBook.
Pura Vida!

Book introduction…
Getting ideas out of your head and onto paper, or some digital medium, is perhaps the ultimate act of mindfulness.
And it’s hard as hell to do!
I know because this is my fourth try at it, not to mention the hundreds of blog posts I’ve written.
Yes, mindfulness is hard, but it’s also well worth the effort.
So, I’ve written Expat Mindfulness – The Book (which serves as a companion to The Definitive Guide to Costa Rica Expat Living) on the topic of a certain strain of mindfulness…
Expat Mindfulness.
You’ll have to admit there are some crazy things going on in the world right now. That was true when I started this project, just around the time Donald Trump took the oath of office. And it’s even truer today.
We’re hearing renewed talk about the imminent threat of nuclear war. We’re seeing race war-like eruptions springing to the fore all over the U.S. We have the specter of man-made global warming bearing down on us. We have a President who seems to always be on the side of his “base” and against what common sense would suggest is best for people and planet.
As a result more and more 40, 50 and even 60-somethings are considering the idea of life outside their country of birth. The idea of becoming an expat is in vogue these days.
A salient point that I hope this book gets across is that the expat experience, if partaken of in a mindful way, can be beneficial not just to the expat him or herself, but to people and planet in general.
How?
Well, you’ll just have to read the rest of the book to see how.
Expat Mindfulness – The Book encourages expat mindfulness and even provides a few ideas about how to put it in practice. It is written with the Costa Rica expat in mind, but the principles are equally applicable wherever you might decide to plant yourself.
I am closing in on my second decade as a Costa Rica expat. Have I always practiced what I preach in this book?
No, I haven’t.
However, another salient point that I hope this book gets across is that expat mindfulness is a process. It takes time and effort to apply and perfect…well, you’ll never really perfect it.
What really counts is not some ephemeral end result, but the process itself.
I hope you enjoy reading my book, but more importantly I hope we all benefit from your reading of this little eBook.
